Kargil, April 16, 2026: A review meeting under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC Kargil, Rakesh Kumar held today to deliberate on measures for decongestion, beautification, and improved civic management of Kargil town.
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on streamlining overhead cabling and removal of redundant infrastructure. The Deputy Commissioner directed the representatives of BSNL, Jio, and Airtel to ensure proper cabling of wires to eliminate clutter and enhance safety. The Power Development Department (PDD) was instructed to remove redundant and unnecessary poles on priority and to streamline existing poles by properly organizing cables. Local cable operators were also directed to regulate and streamline their wiring systems to improve the aesthetic appearance of the market and minimize potential hazards.
The Deputy Commissioner further emphasized the need for proper installation and protection of electricity meters, directing that all meters be secured in appropriate boxes. He also instructed the removal of unnecessary telecom and electric poles across the town to ensure a cleaner and safer urban environment.
Addressing drainage concerns, directions were issued to improve the drainage system in Poyen and the main market area by channeling wastewater effectively towards the river after proper treatment. It was also proposed to utilize gravity-based flow up to Shilikchey and explore the reuse of treated water for agricultural purposes, ensuring both environmental safety and resource optimization.
The meeting also discussed preservation of river hygiene. The Deputy Commissioner strictly directed that washing activities, including vehicle and cloth washing along riverbanks, be prohibited. He instructed the concerned departments to establish designated washing ghats to prevent pollution and maintain the cleanliness and natural beauty of the river. The Forest Department was directed to undertake plantation drives along the riverside to enhance the ecological and visual appeal of the area.
On traffic management, the Deputy Commissioner stressed the need for shifting and decongestion of traffic and parking spaces to ensure smooth vehicular movement within the market area. He suggested regulating small vendors, including milk and grocery shops, in a planned manner to reduce congestion and facilitate better traffic flow.
Furthermore, emphasis was laid on the creation of assets and development of organized commercial spaces. The Deputy Commissioner directed that shops be developed and allotted on rent to generate revenue while maintaining proper urban planning.
Overall, the meeting was fruitful, with comprehensive discussions held on various aspects of urban management. The Deputy Commissioner urged all concerned departments to expedite implementation of the decisions to transform Kargil town into a cleaner, safer, and more attractive destination for both residents and tourists.
The meeting was attended by Additional Superintendent of Police Kargil, Additional District Development Commissioner Kargil, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Administrator Municipal Committee Kargil, Executive Engineers of PDD and PHE, Executive Officer Municipal Committee, and representatives from BSNL, Jio, and Airtel.
