Jammu: In April 2022, as the weather gods lashed their fury through incessant rains and thunderstorm, Budhi Chand of Gole Gujaral in Jammu witnessed his one-room house crashing down to debris and ruins, losing not only the roof on the head, but also his hopes.

Six months later, as Jammu along with the rest of the country braces for a harsh winter season, Budhi Chand entered his rebuilt, and better furnished house. Chand has his heart full of hope and gratitude for Mrs Kamini Mahajan, who along with other social activists made gigantic efforts to provide Chand and his family with their house.

“I was informed in the month of May that the one-room house of a poor family in Gole Gujaral collapsed during the incessant rains of April. The family, headed by Budhi Chand, was forced to seek shelter elsewhere as their hopes, marred by meager income, were also shattered along with their house. It was then that I decided that I will do everything possible to provide the family with a roof on their head,” says Mahajan, an Advocate who practices in J&K High Court, while talking to The Dispatch.

The social activist started raising funds for their rehabilitation and was ready to rebuild their house and life in the next few weeks.

“I could raise funds from my own savings, my family, and many other kind souls in Jammu. Some people helped with money and others with the construction material. The role of Nitin Bharti, Shubam Gupta and Bhawana Gupta has remained pivotal in this effort. We started by clearing the house of the debris and within 3 months, we could rebuild the house, paint and furnish it,” she informs.

Mahajan informs that around Rs 1.75 Lakhs were raised and utilised in rebuilding the house, a gesture for which the family of Budhi Chand has been indebted for a lifetime.

It may be mentioned here that Advocate Mahajan has been working for the downtrodden for more than 6 years now. She has been associated with a number of NGOs and has been a vocal voice against the social menace such as drug consumption.
