Kharu, Feb 11: In a significant push towards environmental conservation and sustainable living, the CII Foundation, supported by HDFC Bank Parivartan, in collaboration with the Block Development Office (RDD) Kharu and Ladakh Renewable Energy Development Agency (LREDA), successfully concluded a six-day community engagement and environmental awareness campaign in Kharu Sub Division.
The campaign, organised at Martselang village, focused on reducing plastic pollution, promoting sustainable alternatives, and strengthening waste segregation practices at the grassroots level. As part of the initiative, nearly 900 cloth bags were distributed among households and community members to encourage the use of eco-friendly alternatives and reduce dependence on single-use plastic.
During the programme, awareness sessions were conducted highlighting the importance of reusable cloth bags, proper segregation of household waste, and maintaining cleanliness in public spaces. The campaign also emphasised community participation in building sustainable waste-management practices.
Block Development Officer, Kharu Sub Division, Ms. Kunzang, who attended the concluding session, stressed the importance of collective responsibility in protecting the environment and maintaining cleanliness in villages. Representatives from the CII Foundation reiterated their commitment to supporting Ladakh’s waste reduction and sustainability goals.
The awareness drive covered six villages and included capacity-building initiatives, awareness programmes, and efforts to improve waste-management infrastructure. In a bid to set an example, organisers ensured the campaign followed eco-friendly practices by promoting reusable materials and discouraging the use of disposable cups and plates during events.
Local residents appreciated the initiative and welcomed the efforts aimed at improving environmental awareness and cleanliness in the region. Officials expressed hope that such campaigns would play a crucial role in building cleaner, greener, and more sustainable communities across Kharu Sub Division.
