Chering Dorjey Lakrook is new LBA President


LEH: Former minister, Chering Dorjey Lakrook has been elected as new President of Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA).

Lakrook, who was currently serving as the senior vice president of LBA, defeated his nearest rival Rigzin Spalbar by a margin of 33 votes, the counting of which was held here today.

While Lakrook, who is also the vice-president of Leh Apex Body spearheading the agitation along with Kargil Democratic Alliance for constitutional safeguards and statehood for Ladakh, polled 179 votes against Spalbar, who got 146 votes.

Addressing his supporters after declaration of the results, Lakrook pledged to prioritise community upliftment and address the demands of Ladakh. “I will strive to work for the welfare of Buddhist community in next 3 years, keeping their interest in mind,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Tashi Gyalson on behalf of LAHDC Leh congratulated Chering Dorjey (Lakrook) on getting elected as the new President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA).

CEC Tashi Gyalson hopes that under the leadership of Chering Dorjey, LBA will continue to strengthen and work tirelessly for the welfare of the Buddhist community in particular and entire Ladakh in general, an official statement said. Gyalson’s counterpart in Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon also congratulated Lakrook on wining the LBA president election 2024.

“Congratulation to Sh. Chering Dorjay Lakrook on wining the @BuddhistLadakh President Election 2024. I hope that his quality leadership and statesmanship shall contribute largely to prosperity of Ladakh and support the common interests and causes of all Ladakhis,” he wrote on X.

Sitting member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Nagmyal also extended his greetings to Lakrook. “Heartiest congratulations to Sh. Chering Dorjey Lakrook Ji on winning the LBA presidency!
As a fellow Buddhist in Ladakh, I assure my sincere support for the new President and his team to uplift Buddhist community and promote harmony among all Ladakhi people. Wishing Kaga Chering Ley a fruitful apolitical term and sending prayers for the well-being of all,” he said.
