Leh: In a high-risk rescue operation, Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of Leh, Tashi Gyalson, was safely evacuated after his vehicle accidentally slipped into the Zanskar River while traveling along the Nimmu–Padum–Darcha (NPD) Road.
The incident occurred as CEC Gyalson was on his way to attend the inauguration ceremony of the Karsha Photang and Yarchos Chenmo, being presided over by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in Zanskar.
Accompanied by his security personnel, the CEC’s convoy faced a life-threatening situation when their vehicle skidded off the road and into the river.
Responding with remarkable promptness, Officer Commanding 114 RCC, Major Ajay Kumar Chand, along with MT Driver (Highly Skilled) Patil Umesh Bhagwan, rushed to the accident site.
Braving extreme terrain and the swift current of the river, the duo carried out a successful and courageous rescue operation, saving all occupants from the semi-submerged vehicle.
Following his rescue, CEC Tashi Gyalson publicly expressed his profound appreciation for the 114 RCC personnel.
“The prompt and selfless actions of Major Ajay Chand and his driver not only saved lives but displayed the highest level of professionalism and bravery. I extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the entire BRO team,” the CEC stated.
Despite the incident, CEC Gyalson proceeded to attend the Karsha Photang and Yarchos Chenmo Inauguration Ceremony, joining dignitaries including BJP State President Tashi Gyaltson Kachu, Councillor Stanzin Lakpa, and President of LBA Youth, Jigmet Rafstan, among others.
The event was a significant cultural and spiritual occasion in Zanskar, marked by the teachings and blessings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, drawing large crowds of devotees and community leaders.
