Leh: CEC Tashi Gyalson lauded the Government of India’s visionary Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) during a meeting with Shweta Singh, Director in the Prime Minister’s Office, held at the Council Secretariat in Leh.
The meeting, aimed at reviewing the ongoing projects under VVP and understanding local needs, was attended by Executive Councillor Tashi Namgyal Yakzee, Korzok Councillor Karma Namdak, Nyoma Councillor Ishey Spalzang, and Chief Planning Officer Tsewang Gyalson.
Tashi Gyalson highlighted that the VVP has brought visible development in border villages like Demchok, citing the construction of blacktopped roads, availability of mobile connectivity, installation of solar street lights and water heaters, piped water supply under the Jal Jeevan Mission, and newly built community halls.
He appreciated the central government’s efforts and noted that the region has seen significant improvement since Ladakh became a Union Territory.
He also spoke about the emerging trend of reverse migration as families begin returning to remote villages due to better infrastructure and services. He called for further support to strengthen inclusive development in these areas, ensuring access to infrastructure, connectivity, and livelihood schemes for all.
The CEC also proposed the granting of commercial landing permits for the airports in Nubra and Mudh and suggested legalising specific trade routes to boost local economies. Executive Councillor Tashi Namgyal Yakzee discussed the importance of livelihood-based projects for women self-help groups and suggested including housing for herders under VVP. Councillor Karma Namdak requested opening certain areas in Chumur for tourism, while Councillor Ishey Spalzang highlighted the need to complete projects under the Border Area Development Programme (BADP).
PMO Director Shweta Singh said her visit was focused on gaining first-hand understanding of the implementation of the Vibrant Villages Programme.
She assured the delegation that all suggestions and concerns raised during the meeting would be duly considered by the appropriate authorities.
