Leh: A historic and spiritually profound day unfolded in the heart of Ladakh as the sacred grounds of the Dharma Centre in Choglamsar bore witness to an event of deep cultural pride and spiritual significance.
His Eminence Khanchen Konchok Rangdol Rinpoche was formally enthroned as the 33rd Khanchen of the Drikung Kagyu lineage—becoming the first Ladakhi ever to be appointed to this revered post in the 800-year-old history of the tradition.
The atmosphere was filled with devotion and reverence as monks, dignitaries, community leaders, and hundreds of devotees gathered from across Ladakh to take part in the auspicious occasion.
Prayers were offered, khataks were laid with respect, and heartfelt congratulations flowed for H.E. Khanchen Konchok Rangdol Rinpoche, whose humility and service have already left a lasting mark on the people of the region.
Among the dignitaries present were LAHDC Leh Chairman/CEC Tashi Gyalson, Dy. Chairman Tsering Angchuk, Executive Councillor Tashi Namgyal Yakzee, LoP Councillor Tsering Namgyal, Councillor Kungyam Thinles Nurbu, Councillor Skurbuchan Lhundup Dorjai, Councillor Temisgam Tashi Tundup, Nominated Sanga Councillor Ven. Konchok Tsepal, LBA President Tsering Dorjey Lakrook, LGA President Ven. Dorje Stanzin, and LBA Women Wing President Kunzes Dolma.
The event was further graced by a distinguished gathering of leaders and spiritual heads, including former MPs Thupstan Chhewang and Jamyang Tsering Namgyal; former MLA Tsering Samphel; former CEC Rigzin Spalbar; BJP State President Tashi Gyalson Khachu; CRO Tibetan Settlement Leh Tashi Dhondup; MIMC Founder Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena; HIAL Co-founder Sonam Wangchuk; and LTO Director Mipham Otsal, among others.
The presence of monk representatives from 16 major monasteries, Padma Shri Morup Namgyal, goba members, and hundreds of devotees from across Ladakh added further significance and spiritual depth to the occasion.
In his address, CEC Tashi Gyalson extended congratulations on behalf of the people of Ladakh, stating that the enthronement of H.E. Khanchen Konchok Rangdol Rinpoche was not just a moment of pride for the Drikung lineage, but a collective honour for all of Ladakh.
He highlighted Rinpoche’s consistent dedication to uplifting the underprivileged and acknowledged LAHDC’s collaboration with him in furthering education and social welfare initiatives. He specifically lauded Rinpoche’s support for institutions like Ratnashri School, which aims to offer quality education and hostel facilities to students from remote villages, especially girls.
CEC Gyalson assured continued support to Rinpoche for the betterment of the region.
Ven. Konchok Tsepal, the Nominated Sanga Councillor, called the day truly historic, noting that H.E. Rinpoche is the first Ladakhi among three Drikung Khanchens appointed since 1959. He offered insights into Rinpoche’s spiritual journey and dedicated service to Ladakh’s people and traditions.
Ven. Dorje Stanzin, President of the Ladakh Gonpa Association, extended congratulations on behalf of all major monasteries, expressing unity and reverence within the spiritual community.
In his enthronement address, H.E. Khanchen Konchok Rangdol Rinpoche invoked the guidance of H.E. Skyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche and reiterated the importance of his ten-point environmental vision for Ladakh. He stressed the need for Ladakhis to safeguard their fragile ecosystem while preserving their spiritual and cultural heritage.
In a powerful call for unity, he urged all Buddhists to look beyond sectarian boundaries and embrace collective identity as followers of Dharma. He also emphasized the urgent need to preserve the Ladakhi language and identity, calling it a living bridge between the past and future generations.
As the ceremony concluded, the enthronement of H.E. Khanchen Konchok Rangdol Rinpoche marked not just a moment of pride, but a call to action for Ladakh to move forward in unity—rooted in faith and mindful of its rich cultural soul.
