Kargil: The Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, conducted an extensive inspection of Community Health Center (CHC) Padum and Government Degree College Zanskar to assess healthcare services and review ongoing development in the education sector.
At CHC Padum, Dr. Akhoon interacted with patients and staff to understand service gaps and evaluated both medical and non-medical infrastructure. During his visit to the lab, OT, ICU, and sterilization unit, he flagged serious underutilization of diagnostic equipment and facilities.
Concerned about the gaps, he instructed Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar to expedite the provision of essential diagnostic machines and form a committee to audit staff, space, and equipment to ensure full utilization.
He expressed displeasure over rooms near the OT and ICU being used as storerooms and directed the BMO to convert them into essential medical service units, such as a blood storage facility. Responding to a request from the BMO, Dr. Akhoon assured that an ambulance would be provided soon and instructed the Executive Engineer ZDA/R&B to complete the handover of staff quarters by July end.
Inspecting the hospital storeroom and residential quarters, he stressed the need for proper organization and resource management.
Later, the CEC visited Government Degree College Zanskar, where he reviewed the progress of key infrastructure projects including the Academic and Science Blocks, Boys’ and Girls’ Hostels, and the Sports Complex—expected to be completed by year-end.
Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar directed the college principal to open the library for student use and suggested initiatives like academic and sports competitions involving local schools, as well as the shared use of computer and biology labs to maximize educational outreach.
Dr. Akhoon was accompanied by Executive Councillor Er. Punchuk Tashi, DC Rakesh Kumar, SDM Zanskar Mohammad Hassan, Executive Engineer Er. Villayat Ali, BMO Dr. Tsering Tashi, and other officials during the visit.
