Kargil: Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, conducted a detailed visit to Karchay Khar and adjoining areas to review ongoing developmental works and address public grievances. His visit included an inspection of the landslide-hit irrigation canal at Bumbis Thang, where he assured local residents that the debris would be cleared promptly to restore water supply.
At Karchekhar Hospital, Dr. Akhoon inaugurated a newly sanctioned ambulance provided through J&K Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. He expressed appreciation to the bank for supporting rural healthcare and assured residents that the ambulance would soon be made operational.
During interactions with villagers, Dr. Akhoon patiently heard their concerns regarding infrastructure gaps, water supply, road connectivity, and healthcare services. He directed concerned officials to resolve pending issues without delay. He instructed preparation of detailed project reports for water-related infrastructure, including a traditional Kalwat structure in Purkichey, a new water storage tank for Karchekhar, and a submersible pump for the hospital. Addressing the community’s drinking water concerns, he assured that the Jal Jeevan Mission-related issues would be tackled urgently and also ordered a fresh field survey for a sustainable water source.
Focusing on road and education infrastructure, the CEC announced that funding had been sanctioned for the construction of a new middle school building and a playground site would soon be identified in consultation with locals. He also confirmed that the Karchekhar–Dandi-Khor link road project had been approved, and that work on the Richen–Forgon Tsang link road was under tendering under the Central Road Fund scheme. He called for a survey to explore the possibility of establishing a public library and expanding the road to the local government school.
In response to healthcare and sanitation needs, Dr. Akhoon approved the installation of another submersible pump for village use and proposed building a solar-passive public toilet near Jamia Masjid. Acknowledging local requests, he confirmed that development work for the village graveyard has been included in the 2025–26 District CAPEX Plan, while restoration of the Yurba canal will be taken up in the 2026–27 plan.
Dr. Akhoon also assured that land compensation concerns would be addressed swiftly by the Revenue Department. The PHE and REW departments have been instructed to prepare DPRs for constructing a new roof for the Maktab and installing a hand pump at the hospital. He also directed officials to explore the feasibility of constructing another link road in the area.
Recognizing the cultural and historic significance of Karchekhar, the CEC supported the idea of promoting heritage tourism in the region, including attractions such as the ancient Buddha statue and the Mir Qasim Tomb.
Dr. Akhoon was accompanied by executive engineers from the Irrigation, PHE, R&B, REW departments, and other concerned officials.
