Brig Mishra to take oath as Ladakh LG on Sunday

LEH: Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) will take oath as the second Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh on Sunday morning.

The swear-in ceremony of the Brig Mishra, who was last Sunday appointed as the new LG of Ladakh, following the resignation of incumbent R K Mathur, will be held at 11:30 AM, Sunday, an official informed.

Mishra will be administered the oath of office by Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh, the chief justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh high court at Sindhu Sanskriti Kendra in Leh, he added.

The L-G will inspect a guard of honour of local police after the swearing-in ceremony, he added.

Brigadier Mishra was appointed as Ladakh’s new Lieutenant Governor on February 12, when President Droupadi Murmu reshuffled and appointed new governors in as many as 13 states and union territories.

According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique, incumbent Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh R K Mathur’s resignation was accepted by the President who appointed Mishra, a former brigadier of the Indian Army, and presently Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.

Mathur, a former defence secretary, was appointed as the first Lt Governor of Ladakh after Jammu and Kashmir was stripped of its statehood and divided into two union territories in August 2019 and served as the LG for over three years.

 

Who is Brig Mishra?

Born in 1939 in Uttar Pradesh, Brig Mishra was commissioned in Infantry, the Madras Regiment, in 1961. He served the Army for over 33 years and retired from the National Security Guard (NSG) in the year 1995.

Brig Mishra, served during all the three major wars forced on India; in 1962 Sino-Indian War, 1965 Indo-Pak War, and 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. He has commanded an Infantry Battalion on Line of Actual Control in Poonch Sector from 1979-81 and fought against the LTTE during the most intense stage of Operation PAWAN on Jaffna-Palali axis and, after the Jaffna battle, in Vavunia and Trincomalee, from 1987 to 1988.

In 1993, as Counter Hijack Force Commander of the National Security Guard (NSG), he led a surgical strike on an Indian Airlines hijacked aircraft at Amritsar. After elimination of the hijacker by the commandos, 126 passengers, 9 infants and 6 crew members were safely rescued. He received Commendation from the Prime Minister of India for this operation.

Brig Mishra holds MA degree from Allahabad University, MSc degree from Madras University, Passed Staff College (PSC) and earned ‘Dagger’ from Defence Services Staff College, LLB degree from Delhi University and PhD degree from Jiwaji University, Gwalior. He has been a Faculty at College of Combat at Mhow and the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington.
