Leh, April 20, 2026:
Ashish Kundra chaired a high-level meeting to strengthen the collection and production processes of Pashmina across Ladakh, with a focus on improving efficiency, quality, and income for local producers.
The meeting emphasized increasing Pashmina yield through improved herd management, enhanced veterinary support, and scientific breeding practices. Directions were issued to ensure timely collection of raw Pashmina from pastoral areas, along with better systems for aggregation and transportation to processing centers.
A key focus area was the strengthening of the dehairing process, crucial for converting raw Pashmina into fine usable fiber. The Chief Secretary stressed the need for proper infrastructure for clean collection, sorting, grading, and dehairing, along with modern machinery and trained manpower to maintain quality and minimize wastage.
Reviewing existing processing units, Kundra directed authorities to modernize facilities and improve efficiency to enhance value addition. He also emphasized ensuring fair and timely remuneration for herders and primary producers.
Highlighting supply chain gaps, he called for robust storage systems, stronger cooperative networks, and streamlined procurement and distribution mechanisms. The importance of quality certification and branding of Ladakh Pashmina was also stressed to boost its global competitiveness and preserve authenticity.
Further directions included strengthening the role of cooperatives and self-help groups, along with capacity building and skill development initiatives for herders and artisans.
Reiterating the Administration’s commitment, Ashish Kundra urged all stakeholders to work in close coordination to position Ladakh as a global leader in high-quality Pashmina production while ensuring sustainable livelihoods for pastoral communities.
The meeting was attended by senior officials including Rudra Goud P T, Bhanu Prabha, Shashanka Ala, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain, along with experts and representatives from cooperative societies.
