The Basgo Micro Watershed under the WDC–05 Leh Nimmo Project came alive today with a vibrant celebration of the Watershed Mahotsav, marked by strong community participation and appreciation for ongoing watershed development efforts. Shri A.G. Zargar, ACD RDD & PRI, graced the event as the Chief Guest, alongside Naib Tehsildar Nimmo Shri Mushtaq Ahmed, the Nambardar, micro-watershed representatives, SHGs, UGs, teachers, students of Govt. High School Nimmo, and local residents.
Community leaders, including the Nambardar and watershed functionaries, expressed heartfelt gratitude to IWMP Leh (Watershed Department) for implementing transformative Soil & Water Conservation (SWC) measures. Key interventions such as reservoir-cum-percolation tanks, multiple I-khuls, snow check dams, land development, water reservoirs, solar-lifting pumps, and chain-link fencing have significantly improved water access and turned barren areas into cultivable land. These developments have enabled plantation and fodder intercropping through drip irrigation under the NRM component.
Under the Production Component, works like crop diversification, free distribution of high-yielding certified seeds, plantation of improved apple varieties, and remodelling of traditional water mills were highly appreciated.
The Livelihood Component received special recognition for setting up handloom weaving and processing units for SHGs, providing new income avenues for local women.
Smt. Shenaz, Project Officer/Nodal Officer, presented a detailed overview of completed works and upcoming interventions, urging the community to ensure proper maintenance and janbhagidari of the assets created.
In his address, Chief Guest Shri A.G. Zargar applauded the watershed team for impactful execution and reaffirmed RDD & PRI’s commitment to community development. Naib Tehsildar Mushtaq Ahmed assured prompt grievance redressal.
Students of Govt. High School Nimmo added cultural vibrancy with a quiz competition reinforcing the message: “Khet ka paani khet mein, gaon ka paani gaon mein.”
During the interaction session, farmers shared concerns and suggestions, which were duly noted by officials. The event also featured the lokarpan of completed works, formally handing them over to the community for ownership, followed by Bhumi Pujan at designated sites to mark the beginning of new interventions.
The Mahotsav concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening sustainable development, water security, and community empowerment under the PMKSY WDC–05 project.
