Nubra, Dec 1:
The Sheep Husbandry Department, Nubra, organised an Awareness / Breeders’ Camp today at Chulunkha village under the National Livestock Mission (NLM), drawing active participation from local residents.
The programme began with a welcome address by Shri Ghulam Mohd, Flock Inspector, who underlined the importance of such initiatives in strengthening livestock management and boosting rural livelihoods.
Dr. Rauful Hassan, Incharge LDO Nubra, delivered an extensive lecture on departmental schemes including the National Livestock Mission and Intensive Development Programme. He highlighted the economic and ecological value of sheep and goat rearing, the role of manure in organic farming, and the nutritional benefits of goat milk. Dr. Hassan also encouraged villagers to form a Farmers Producer Organisation (FPO), a proposal they welcomed positively.
He further briefed participants on key management practices such as neonatal care, feeding of pregnant animals, vaccination schedules, and routine dipping to ensure herd health.
As a resource person, Dr. Changchup Dorjay, Research Assistant at Pashmina Goat Farm Upshi, spoke about initiatives to revive livestock populations in non-traditional areas. He explained subsidised livestock units available at 75% subsidy, free distribution of elite rams and bucks for genetic improvement, and credit support options including the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) facility.
Villagers raised practical challenges they face, requesting shearing machines, predator-proof corrals, open paddocks, livestock units, milk replacer powder for kids and lambs, and Rarzee.
The department assured that all demands would be examined and addressed under appropriate schemes.
