ASI observes World Heritage Week at Leh Palace

LEH: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Mini Circle Leh, organized World Heritage Week at Leh Palace.

The event featured notable figures such as Secretary Tourism & Culture Kacho Mehboob Ali Khan, Padma Murup Namgyal, former chairman MMS, Elijah Gergan, Deputy Secretary Culture Nazir Ladakhi, Actor/Director Phonsok Ladakhi, and many others besides Students of GMS Skalzangling.

The event began with the welcome speech by Dr Sonam Spalzin from Archaeological Survey of India, Mini Circle Leh.

Gergan delivered a detailed lecture on heritage preservation, and Phonsok Ladakhi, along with Hakima Banoo Ali, recited poetry on “LehChan Spalkar” written by Kacho Sikandar Khan.

The event also included insights from Murup Namgyal on Ladakh’s historical heritages.
Kacho Mehboob, the chief guest of the occasion emphasized the significance of such events, pledging to introduce Ladakh Heritage as one chapter in schools and showcasing the administration’s commitment to promoting tourism through heritage sites.

A forthcoming book on 900 heritage sites of Ladakh was announced, and a photo exhibition enriched the World Heritage Week celebration.

He revealed that the Administration is committed to work on some projects in near future with University of Ladakh and ASI.

During their speeches, all the guest speakers lauded ASI’s commendable efforts in preserving and promoting Ladakh’s rich heritage. It’s noteworthy that World Heritage Week is observed annually from 19-25 November, with World Heritage Day celebrated on 19 April each year.
