Leh: In a unique move to boost mobility in Ladakh’s challenging terrain, the Indian Army has officially inducted Bactrian camels—sturdy, double-humped animals native to the region—for patrolling and carrying supplies to remote high-altitude posts.
These camels, known for their strength and endurance in harsh climates, were trained and handed over by the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR), Leh.
A total of 14 camels as reported by Daily Excelsior , along with their health records and training manuals, have been given to the Army’s 14 Corps.
While roads in Ladakh have seen significant development, the final stretch to many forward posts still relies on porters and pack animals. With this addition, the Army now has another reliable means for last-mile logistics. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is also exploring the use of these camels.
In parallel, drones and mechanical mules are also being introduced to enhance logistics in the region.
