Kargil, December 06 — The Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, presided as Chief Guest at the launch of Whispers of Ladakh, a book authored and illustrated by Kacho Jaffer Ali Khan. The event, held at the Tourism Facilitation Centre in Biamathang, drew a distinguished audience, including Ladakh MP Haji Mohd Haneefa Jaan as Guest of Honour and Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar (IAS) as Special Guest.
In his address, CEC Dr. Akhoon congratulated the author and his family, calling the book a moment of pride for Kargil and the wider Ladakh community. He described the work as a “remarkable asset for future generations,” noting that it captures Ladakh’s cultural essence through detailed illustrations of traditional attire, tools, artifacts and customs. He lauded the author’s commitment to preserving Ladakh’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage, emphasising that such documentation plays a vital role in safeguarding the region’s identity.
MP Haji Mohd Haneefa Jaan echoed the sentiment, praising the book as an important addition to Ladakh’s literary and cultural landscape. Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar (IAS) also commended the effort, recognising it as a rare and meaningful contribution that will greatly benefit cultural understanding and research.
Whispers of Ladakh: An Illustrated Chronicle of Ladakh’s Fashion, Tools and Artifacts in the Local Tongue stands out as a unique attempt to preserve traditional vocabulary and expressions. Through simple handmade sketches, the book revives local words associated with everyday objects—many of which are on the verge of disappearing from common use.
The launch marked a significant moment for cultural preservation in Ladakh, celebrating both the region’s heritage and the author’s dedication to documenting it.
