Leh, Dec 31: Additional Deputy Commissioner Leh Ghulam Mohd today chaired a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) to review preparations for Road Safety Month, scheduled to be observed from January 1 to January 31 across the district.
The meeting focused on coordinated planning, awareness campaigns and long-term measures to reduce road accidents and improve traffic management. Senior officers from the Police, Public Works, Education, Municipal Committee, Project HIMANK, ARTO, Traffic Police and other concerned departments attended the meeting.
It was decided to install road safety banners and distribute pamphlets at key locations in Leh, while the inaugural function of Road Safety Month will be held at Singe Namgyal Chowk. Awareness programmes will be organised throughout the month with the participation of students, civil society members, traders, NGOs and government officials. In coordination with the RTO, medals and recognitions will also be awarded to individuals contributing to road safety awareness.
The Traffic Police were directed to ensure effective traffic regulation during the programmes, while the District Police and Traffic Police will jointly conduct road safety awareness drives. The District and UT State Motor Garages were tasked with spreading awareness on vehicle preparedness and emergency response from a disaster management perspective. Departments including the Municipal Committee, HIMANK and PDD were instructed to ensure all street lights are functional to improve road visibility.
The Committee also deliberated on long-term strategies to reduce accidents through stronger enforcement, better road engineering, public awareness and responsible road behaviour. The Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Leh, highlighted the role of improved road engineering and the introduction of e-bus projects to ease congestion in Leh town.
The ADC emphasised inter-departmental coordination and collective responsibility to make roads safer, reiterating the administration’s commitment to reducing accidents through sustained awareness, infrastructure improvement and effective enforcement.
