Leh: After the establishment of the micro-irrigation (drip/sprinkler) system at Kulum Yokma, the Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson along with Executive Councillor, Agriculture, Stanzin Chosphel, and DC Leh, Shrikant Suse visited Kulum village today to oversee the progress of work regarding revival of crop cultivation in Kulum due to scarcity of water.
The officials were delighted to witness the success story of the micro-irrigation system at Kulum Yokma as the crop cultivation in the village was hindered due to scarcity of water because of climate change, especially after the tragic flash flood that occurred in the year 2010.
Chief Agriculture Officer Leh apprised the officials of the success story behind the project as he mentioned that the families of Kulum Yokma have now been rehabilitated successfully. He also stated that crops like potatoes and summer squash are being successfully grown in the field with the help of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems. He further informed that the Department is aiming to cultivate high-yield crops from next year onwards. He further extended his gratitude to the Hill Council Leh for their assistance to the Department in establishing the micro-irrigation system in a place like Kulum.

In his message, CEC Gyalson expressed his happiness and stated that it is a dream come true for the villagers of Kulum Yokma by witnessing such good results through the project. He added that the Hill Council and UT Administration are collectively making all possible efforts in bringing changes through various initiatives which include the successful micro-irrigation project in Kulum Yokma. CEC Gyalson stressed the importance of farming and other land-based activities for a sustainable future for Ladakh. He assured of the Council’s support in overcoming such impacts of water crises in all other places as seen in the case of Kulum Yokma.
EC Agriculture expressed gratitude to the leadership and efforts of CEC Gyalson for successfully resolving the hardships faced by the villagers of Kulum Yokma due to water scarcity. He also heaped the efforts of the Agriculture Department in making the project successful and hoped that the department would successfully extend the project further in various other villages in future.
Highlighting the successful story of the micro-irrigation system in Kulum Yokma, DC Leh stressed that there is a need for better water management and conservation in all villages. He also appreciated the efforts of the Agriculture Department, LAHDC Leh in successfully implementing the project in Kulum Yokma.
CAO Leh, DAO Leh, SDM Kharu, Head GB Pant NIHE Ladakh, and various other Departmental officers accompanied CEC Gyalson during the visit.
