Leh, June 26: Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri V.K. Saxena, held an engaging and productive interaction with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, chaired by Member of Parliament Dr. Shashi Tharoor, during the Committee’s visit to Ladakh.
During the interaction, the Committee sought detailed information regarding the key challenges confronting the Union Territory and the measures being undertaken to address them. The Lieutenant Governor briefed the members on Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem and the pressing environmental concerns arising from climate change, including water scarcity and ecological vulnerability.
Shri Saxena highlighted several innovative initiatives launched by the administration to address these challenges. He informed the Committee about Project Him Sarovar, aimed at enhancing water conservation and storage capacities across the region, as well as the construction of Rock Check Dams under the Sindhu Jal Samridhi Abhiyan, which are playing a crucial role in groundwater recharge and sustainable water management. He also elaborated on the administration’s extensive plantation drives aimed at increasing green cover and strengthening environmental resilience in the high-altitude desert region.
The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that these initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy to safeguard Ladakh’s unique ecology while ensuring sustainable development for local communities.
The Parliamentary Committee appreciated the efforts undertaken by the Ladakh Administration to address environmental and water-related challenges in the region. The Committee members lauded the innovative and community-centric approach adopted by the administration and assured their full support and cooperation in furthering Ladakh’s developmental and environmental objectives.
