Leh, June 23: Senior IPS officer Anand Jain on Tuesday officially assumed charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of the Union Territory of Ladakh, taking over the leadership of the region’s police force following his appointment by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

A 1999-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the AGMUT cadre, Jain has been transferred from Jammu and Kashmir, where he was serving as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Armed Police. His appointment was announced by the MHA on June 22 and comes into effect immediately.

With his joining, Ladakh now gets a full-time police chief at a time when the Union Territory continues to witness administrative expansion, developmental activity and evolving security requirements.

Anand Jain succeeds K.K. Sharma, who had been holding additional charge of the DGP post after the transfer of Mukesh Singh to Manipur as Director General of Police.

Known for his extensive experience in policing and security administration, Jain brings more than 27 years of service in various operational and leadership roles, largely in Jammu and Kashmir.

During his career, he has served in several important positions including Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Additional Director General of Police, Jammu Zone, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Jammu, Baramulla, Rajouri and Reasi, besides holding assignments at Police Headquarters and command positions in India Reserve Police battalions.

He most recently served as ADGP, Armed Police, Jammu and Kashmir, where he oversaw critical policing and administrative responsibilities.

Jain has also been recognised with several distinguished honours during his service, including the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, Police Medal for Meritorious Service and Police Medal for Gallantry.

Officials said the new DGP will oversee the overall functioning of Ladakh Police, including law and order management, public safety, crime prevention and coordination with security agencies operating in the Union Territory.

His appointment is being viewed as an important administrative development aimed at strengthening policing and institutional leadership in Ladakh.

With extensive field experience and a background in operational policing, Anand Jain is expected to lead the force with focus on security coordination, police welfare and public-oriented policing initiatives in the Union Territory.
