Khaltse, June 17: As part of ongoing efforts to combat substance abuse and promote community awareness, a Drug Abuse Awareness Programme was organized at Hemisshukpachan Panchayat in Khaltse subdivision on Wednesday, bringing together local residents, Panchayat representatives and officials from various departments.

The programme was attended by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Liker, Shri Gurmeet Namgial, SHO Khaltse Shri Tsewang Nurboo, Dr. Padma, Psychiatrist, members of the District Drug De-addiction Awareness Team, Ms. Purnima from the Forensic Team, and other dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering, speakers highlighted the growing threat posed by drug abuse and its adverse impact on individuals, families and society. They stressed that substance abuse not only affects physical and mental health but also undermines social harmony and economic well-being.

The resource persons emphasized the importance of awareness, prevention, timely intervention, counseling and rehabilitation as key strategies in tackling drug addiction. They also educated participants about the warning signs of substance abuse and the support mechanisms available for those seeking help.

Special focus was placed on sensitizing young people about the dangers of narcotics and encouraging them to adopt healthy and productive lifestyles. The speakers urged the youth to channel their energy into education, sports and community development activities rather than falling prey to drug abuse.

Officials reiterated that collective community action, family support and institutional intervention are essential to effectively address the challenge of substance abuse and safeguard future generations.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and a collective pledge by participants to work together in creating a drug-free, healthy and socially responsible community.
