Leh, April 24: In a significant boost to cultural and educational infrastructure in Ladakh, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Friday visited the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies at Choglamsar, where he inaugurated key facilities and assured continued government support for the institute’s growth.
Accompanied by Culture Secretary Vivek Aggarwal, the minister was accorded a traditional welcome with khatags by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajesh Ranjan.
During the visit, Shekhawat inaugurated the newly constructed Yangchan Lamo (Sarasvati) Girls’ Hostel, marking a step towards strengthening residential infrastructure for students. He also performed the Bhumi Poojan for the proposed Sowa Rigpa Hospital building, aimed at promoting traditional Tibetan medicine in the region.
Later, addressing students and faculty at the Arya Nagarjuna Auditorium, the Union Minister highlighted the Centre’s commitment to preserving and promoting Buddhist studies and cultural heritage in Ladakh. He assured that the Ministry of Culture would extend full support in addressing key issues, including the establishment of a dedicated School Board and overall institutional development.
Culture Secretary Vivek Aggarwal echoed similar assurances, emphasizing the importance of academic and infrastructural advancement at the institute.
His Eminence Thuksay Rinpoche, who was present on the occasion, appealed to the Union Minister and the Ministry to continue supporting the institute’s expansion and progress, underlining its role in preserving Buddhist knowledge and traditions.
The event witnessed the presence of prominent dignitaries, including representatives from the Ladakh Buddhist Association and the All Ladakh Gonpa Association, along with faculty members and students.
The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Tsering Choldan, Deputy Registrar (I/c), CIBS Leh.
