Leh : India has made a remarkable debut on the global dairy stage, with four Indian products winning medals at the Mundial do Queijo do Brasil 2026, an international competition for cheese and dairy products. The achievement has brought special attention to Ladakh’s emerging artisanal dairy sector.

Among the winners, Eleftheria Gulmarg (Brie Style) earned the prestigious Super Gold medal, marking the highest honour for India at the competition.

The Gold medals were secured by Yak Churpi – Soft, Nordic Farm, Leh (Ladakh) and Eleftheria Brunost (Whey Cheese), while Eleftheria Kaali Miri (Belper Knolle Style) received a Silver medal.

Celebrating the achievement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s growing global presence in artisanal dairy products, noting that such recognition strengthens the country’s position in niche food exports and traditional food innovation.

“Cheese from India makes its mark globally… India made an impressive debut at the Mundial do Queijo do Brasil 2026… Four Indian products won medals…” the Prime Minister said in his post, congratulating the winners including Mausam Narang and Thenlay Nurboo for their efforts in promoting indigenous dairy excellence.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s appreciation, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vikram Kumar Saxena expressed gratitude, stating that the recognition will significantly benefit the region’s local entrepreneurs and farmers.

“Thank you Hon’ble Prime Minister for appreciating and encouraging the local entrepreneurs of Ladakh. This appreciation will further strengthen the local farmers and enterprises in Ladakh. It will create new avenues of sustainable local employment and spur economic growth in the Union Territory,” the LG said.

The achievement is being seen as a major boost for Ladakh’s niche dairy sector, particularly yak-based products, which are gaining international recognition for their unique flavour profile and traditional production methods. Industry observers say the success could open new export opportunities and encourage more sustainable, high-value rural enterprises in the region.
