Kargil, December 19:
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Kargil Imteeaz Kacho on Thursday chaired a meeting of the District Tuberculosis (TB) Forum to review the progress of TB elimination activities and discuss challenges and strategies for achieving the goal of TB-Mukt Kargil.
During the meeting, District Tuberculosis Officer Dr Mohd Abbas highlighted the importance of community participation and societal involvement in eradicating tuberculosis. He said creating awareness and removing fear among patients is crucial, as TB is a completely curable disease if diagnosed and treated on time. He informed that 40 Panchayats in Kargil district are actively participating in TB elimination efforts, with encouraging recovery rates being recorded.
Dr Abbas also briefed the forum about nutritional supplements and support provided to TB patients over the past five years, in addition to free medicines and other assistance. He discussed the male-female patient ratio and explained that while TB is contagious, transmission largely depends on an individual’s immunity. He added that although public cooperation has been satisfactory, contact testing remains a major challenge requiring sensitive handling.
ADC Imteeaz Kacho stressed the critical role of media in spreading awareness about tuberculosis while ensuring strict confidentiality of patients. He emphasized effective use of platforms of the Department of Information and Public Relations and other communication channels to counter stigma and promote awareness. The ADC said tuberculosis can be minimized and eradicated through coordinated inter-departmental efforts and collective responsibility.
The meeting concluded with a resolve to strengthen inter-sectoral coordination, improve contact testing mechanisms and continue sustained awareness campaigns to realize the vision of a TB-free Kargil.
