Thigspa and the promise of Ladakhi cinema

When a small film from a high-altitude desert wins recognition, it carries more than applause — it carries the weight of a region’s voice being heard. Thigspa (“Last Drop”), a Ladakhi-language short film directed by Tsering Wangdus Lonpo and Tashi Dawa, has recently won honours at the Kashmir World Film Festival, after being recognised earlier at the Himalayan Film Festival in Leh. It is a remarkable achievement — not only for the filmmakers but for Ladakh’s growing creative community that continues to tell stories with conviction and clarity despite limited resources.

Thigspa, as its name suggests, evokes ideas of scarcity, survival and renewal — themes deeply resonant with Ladakh’s fragile ecology and resilient people. Though small in scale, the film’s impact is large: it reaffirms that Ladakhi cinema is maturing, finding its language and rhythm in an industry often dominated by metropolitan voices. Lonpo and Dawa’s work shows that authentic storytelling, rooted in local experience and performed in native idiom, can travel far beyond its landscape.

But Thigspa’s success also raises a larger question: how much longer can Ladakh’s filmmakers rely solely on passion and persistence? The region’s creative talent needs a structured ecosystem — training programmes, film grants, post-production facilities, and screening platforms — if it is to grow into a sustainable cultural industry. Without such support, many potential voices will fade before they find the camera’s light.

Filmmaking in Ladakh is not only about art; it is also about preservation and participation. Every frame captures a dialect, a mountain, a face, a tradition that modernity threatens to erase. Films like Thigspa remind us that art can serve as both mirror and memory — preserving what is precious and prompting what must change.

The Union Territory Administration, local councils, and cultural institutions would do well to recognise this. Establishing a Ladakh Film Development Fund, supporting youth workshops, and providing platforms for local screenings are small investments with lasting cultural dividends.

If Ladakh backs its storytellers today, it will not only nurture a creative economy but also ensure that its landscapes speak through its own people. Thigspa may mean “the last drop”, but for Ladakh’s cinema, it feels very much like the first spark.
