Leh: Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta on Wednesday virtually inaugurated 35 newly constructed buildings, including four staff quarters and several other infrastructure projects developed under Special Development Package (SDP) schemes in Leh.
The projects were inaugurated on what marked the last working day of the 6th Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, whose five-year term is set to expire on November 1.
Appreciating the contribution of the outgoing Council, the Lt. Governor lauded Chief Executive Councillor Adv. Tashi Gyalson, Executive Councillors and all Councillors for their efforts in implementing development works across the district.
Speaking to Indus Dispatch, CEC Tashi Gyalson said, “Today marked the last working day of our Council. Around 60 projects were completed and inaugurated. The administration will now take a call on appointing a caretaker authority as there are no immediate poll dates announced yet.”
According to officials, the Union Territory administration, in consultation with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), is likely to assign powers of the Council to a local officer—most likely the Deputy Commissioner who serves as its Chief Executive Officer—until fresh elections are held. However, there is no official confirmation on this.
Elections to the new Council have been delayed due to several administrative and political factors, including the creation of five new districts in Ladakh, which are yet to take shape.
The MHA had in August 2024 approved the formation of five new districts and later announced 33 percent reservation for women in both Hill Councils of Leh and Kargil.
However, formal creation of the new districts and identification of reserved seats is still pending.
