Leh, September 9, 2025: The Department of Agriculture, Leh, successfully organized the Kisan Mela 2025 today at the Eco-Park, Leh. The event was graced by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, as the Chief Guest, and witnessed the presence of the First Lady of Ladakh, Smt. Bindu Gupta, Administrative Secretary Shri. Bhupesh Chaudhary IAS, the Hon’ble Executive Councilor (Agriculture), Shri Stanzin Chosphel, Director DIHAR, Dr. O.P. Chaurasia, senior officers of the Administration, and other distinguished guests. The Mela drew enthusiastic participation from farmers, entrepreneurs, self-help groups, progressive growers, students, and stakeholders from across the Union Territory.
In his welcome address, Secretary, Agriculture, Shri Bhupesh Chaudhary, extended a warm welcome to the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor and all dignitaries, acknowledging their guidance and support to Ladakh’s agricultural sector. He emphasized the significance of the Kisan Mela as a platform for showcasing innovations, facilitating farmer-scientist interactions, and promoting Ladakh’s organic and sustainable farming practices. He also announced with pride that 34 villages in Leh district have now been formally certified as organic, marking a milestone in Ladakh’s journey towards becoming a model region for high-altitude, climate resilient organic agriculture.
The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor inaugurated the Kisan Mela by lighting the ceremonial lamp and visited various exhibition stalls set up by farmers, self-help groups, and Agri-entrepreneurs. The stalls displayed a wide range of vegetables, flowers, organic products, traditional seeds, food processing innovations, and modern farming techniques. Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble LG underlined the importance of agriculture as the backbone of Ladakh’s economy and farmers as its true strength. He lauded the resilience and hard work of the farming community in Sustaining livelihoods and ensuring food security despite geographical and climatic challenges. He further stressed that with the right blend of traditional wisdom and modern technology, Ladakh’s farmers can emerge as torchbearers of organic and sustainable agriculture in the country.
The Hon’ble LG distributed organic certificates to farmers representing 34 villages and inaugurated the exhibition on “Organic Products from Ladakh,” which featured premium produce such as apricots, sea-buckthorn, buckwheat, barley, and diverse vegetables with strong potential for branding and value addition. An exhibition of agricultural machinery was also organized as part of the event, showcasing modern tools and mechanized solutions tailored to Ladakh’s terrain, giving farmers the opportunity to learn about equipment that can enhance productivity, reduce drudgery, and improve efficiency.
The Kisan Mela 2025 served as a vibrant platform for farmers to interact with scientists and experts, learn about new technologies and practices, explore avenues for value addition and marketing, and build networks for collective growth. With active participation from farmers, youth, women SHGs, institutions, and entrepreneurs, the event reaffirmed Ladakh’s resolve to make agriculture more sustainable, resilient, and economically rewarding, while safeguarding its organic traditions.
The Department of Agriculture expressed gratitude to the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Shri Kavinder Gupta, the First Lady, Smt.
