Leh: In a major boost to Ladakh’s connectivity and infrastructure, the Government of India has informed the Lok Sabha that over 1,670 kilometres of additional roads have been constructed or blacktopped in the Union Territory since it was carved out of Jammu & Kashmir in 2019.
In a written reply on Tuesday, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, highlighted that Ladakh has seen significant progress in road development under various central and UT-administered schemes, including CRIF, PMGSY, and local initiatives.
The minister also noted that Ladakh is now well-equipped with snow-clearance machinery, enabling road access even during harsh winter months. Additionally, the construction of helipads at multiple locations has further improved emergency and logistical connectivity in remote areas.
“Since becoming a Union Territory, Ladakh has made remarkable strides in infrastructure. The improved road network has not only enhanced year-round accessibility but also played a vital role in promoting tourism and boosting the local economy,” Rai stated.
Tourism statistics shared by the Ladakh administration reflect this transformation. Tourist arrivals have increased steadily post-UT formation, with 5.31 lakh visitors in 2022, 5.25 lakh in 2023, and over 3.76 lakh by mid-2024, compared to 2.79 lakh tourists in 2019.
The enhanced road connectivity has shortened travel times, made journeys safer, opened up new destinations for visitors, and helped in promoting winter and adventure tourism across Ladakh.
Ladakh was granted Union Territory status following the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, marking a historic reorganisation that also saw Jammu and Kashmir designated as a separate UT.
