Leh: Iran has openly backed India in the wake of fresh US tariffs and sanctions, accusing Washington of “weaponizing the economy” to impose its will on sovereign nations.
The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi condemned President Donald Trump’s latest tariffs on Indian imports and the sanctions placed on several Indian companies for trading with Tehran. In a sharp statement, it called the US policy “coercive, discriminatory, and in violation of international law and India’s national sovereignty,” describing it as a “modern form of economic imperialism.”
“The United States continues to weaponize the economy and use sanctions to dictate its will on independent nations such as Iran and India and impede their growth and development,” the embassy said on its official X account. It added that resisting such policies was a step toward a stronger, non-Western-led multilateral world order and a more powerful Global South.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry also blasted the US move, calling the sanctions on its oil and energy sector “unlawful and oppressive.” Spokesperson Esmail Baqaei said they were clear evidence of US hostility toward the Iranian people.
The reaction came after the US State Department announced sanctions on 20 companies, including six Indian firms, for purchasing petroleum and petrochemical products from Iran — part of Washington’s long-standing effort to curb Tehran’s oil exports over its alleged nuclear weapons program.
