Leh: Marking 26 years of India’s triumph in the 1999 Kargil War, UT Ladakh observed Kargil Vijay Diwas with solemn pride and heartfelt reverence at the War Memorial in Leh. The commemorative ceremony honoured the unmatched bravery and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces.

In a poignant moment, Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Adv. Tashi Gyalson laid a ceremonial wreath, joining ex-servicemen, war veterans, officials, and citizens in paying rich tributes to the fallen soldiers.

Dr. Pawan Kotwal (IAS), Chief Secretary of UT Ladakh, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

In his address, he paid homage to the valour of Param Vir Chakra awardees and Ladakh’s own Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, Maha Vir Chakra. He lauded the resilience of troops posted in the region’s high-altitude terrain and reaffirmed the administration’s continued support for the armed and paramilitary forces.

Speaking on the significance of the day, CEC Tashi Gyalson said, “Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just a ceremony, it’s a solemn reminder of the supreme sacrifices that secured our nation’s honour.” He also reflected on the relevance of Operation Sindoor, calling attention to ongoing sacrifices by India’s armed forces and underscoring every citizen’s duty in strengthening the nation.

The dignitaries honoured war heroes and their families with traditional Pheypor and shawls, symbolising gratitude and respect. The event resonated with patriotism as participants united in remembering the courage, endurance, and sacrifice of India’s soldiers.

Among the prominent attendees were Former MP Thupstan Chhewang, Former CECs Rigzin Spalbar and Gyal P Wangyal, BJP State President Tashi Gyalson Khachu, AAP Convener Tsering Phuntsog, District Congress President Rigzin Namgyal, Col. Sonam Wangchuk (MVC), and other dignitaries from civil society, armed forces, and public service.

The ceremony was a powerful reminder that freedom is preserved not just by arms, but by shared responsibility and unwavering national pride.
