Leh, March 14: The Department of Horticulture in Leh organised farmers’ training programmes on pruning and pest management of orchards at Dhomkhar and Lamayuru villages in the Khaltse zone to enhance farmers’ knowledge of scientific orchard management practices.
Around 160 farmers from the local community participated in the training sessions, which focused on proper pruning techniques, pest and disease control, and maintaining orchard sanitation to improve the health and productivity of fruit trees.
The programme was attended by Chief Horticulture Officer Kunzang Wangmo and Incharge Horticulture Development Officer, Khaltse, Kunzes Angmo, who interacted with farmers and emphasised the importance of adopting scientific horticulture practices to increase yield and ensure sustainable orchard development.
During the sessions, officials conducted practical demonstrations in the field, explaining correct pruning methods and effective pest management strategies for fruit orchards.
Farmers were also informed about various horticulture schemes being implemented by the department and were encouraged to take advantage of these initiatives to improve and expand their orchards.
Participants appreciated the initiative and actively engaged in discussions and demonstrations. The department reiterated its commitment to organising such capacity-building programmes to strengthen the horticulture sector and support farmers’ livelihoods in the region.
