JAMMU: At least ten people have died and 55 were injured after a bus carrying pilgrims to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine fell into a gorge in the Jajjar Koti area of Jammu district on Tuesday morning.
Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu Chandan Kohil said that the bus was on its way to Katra from Amritsar when its driver lost control at a bridge near Jannar Koti and it fell into a gorge.
He said that in the incident 10 people have died and 55 are injured, while a major rescue operation has been launched. “All the injured have been admitted to Government Medical College Jammu,” he said.
Principal of GMC Jammu, Dr Shashi Sudan told that two injured who were brought to the hospital were declared dead, while others had died on the spot. She added that all the injured are under treatment at the hospital and among them two are critical.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha has expressed his sorrow over the incident.
“Extremely pained by the loss of lives in a tragic bus accident in Jhajjar Kotli, Jammu. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families & prayers for a speedy recovery of the injured,” the office of LG J&K tweeted. He also said that he has directed the district administration to provide all possible assistance and treatment to the injured.
