Leh: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, RK Mathur, on Friday attended the Conference on Sustainability and Culture as a part of the Agni Tattva outreach programme under the Sumangalam campaign to tackle climate change, in Leh.

The conference has been organised by the Power Foundation of India and Vigyan Bharti (VIBHA). Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal; Deputy Chairman, LAHDC Leh, Tsering Angchuk; Director General, Power Foundation of India (PFI), Sanjeev Nandan Sahai; Secretary, VIBHA, PA Vivekananda Pai; Secretary, PDD, Ravinder Kumar, were present in the event.
LG Mathur thanked PFI for choosing Leh as the first location in the country to kickstart the Sumangalam campaign. He stated that Ladakh has many learnings to share with the rest of the country. He stressed the need for change in the thinking and adopting the path for developmental activities that are in accordance with the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India.
LG Mathur stated that the existence of the entire human race would be endangered if there is any damage to the Global Commons. Stating that Ladakh has been sustainable for centuries, LG Mathur emphasised the need for adopting sustainable practices with modern changes for the development of the region. He stressed the need to control unsustainable practices, including eating habits, and adopting a healthier and sustainable lifestyle.

LG Mathur highlighted the initiatives taken by the Administration and both the Hill Councils to realise the objective of a carbon-neutral Ladakh, viz. phasing out of DG sets and replacing them with grid connectivity; providing decentralised power sources such as solar for water lifting and heating in rural areas of Ladakh; tapping different renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, hydel and geothermal and production of hydrogen as green fuel in Ladakh, etc. He stated that his vision is to see Ladakh becoming the first Union Territory to run on hydrogen.
LG Mathur stressed the need for the protection of the Himalayan ecosystem as it is critical for India as well as the entire world. He emphasised the need for the promotion of the culture of sustainability.
Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, stressed the need for using Indian philosophy as a base for development and promoting sustainable practices. He emphasised on interdependency and co-existence and the need for the promotion of eco-friendly energy sources in Ladakh.

Deputy Chairman, LAHDC Leh, Tsering Angchok, highlighted the need to frame policy using the outcomes of the conference and learnings from Ladakh to tackle climate change. He shared the impacts of climate change faced by the people residing in Himalayan and trans-Himalayan regions, including receding glaciers.
Secretary, PDD, Ravinder Kumar, shared various initiatives being taken by the Administration, including providing a reliable 24×7 clean and green power supply to the people of Ladakh, the introduction of triple layer polycarbonate greenhouses in Ladakh, the introduction of Mission Organic Development Initiative (MODI) to make Ladakh a fully organic region, etc.
Secretary, VIBHA, PA Vivekananda Pai gave an introduction to Agni Tattva.
Earlier, DG PFI Sanjeev Nandan Sahai welcomed the guests while Advisor, PFI, Kalpana Kar, gave the vote of thanks.
Films on Agni and Sustainability were screened during the event.
Government officials, private organisations, students and teachers from schools from Leh were present at the conference.
