Zanskar, September 15: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated the 11th Ladakh Zanskar Festival 2026, marking the first edition of the festival since Zanskar attained district status in April this year.

The two-day festival celebrates Zanskar’s rich cultural heritage, traditions, crafts and growing tourism potential. During the inaugural event, the L-G inspected cultural stalls and Doksa exhibitions showcasing local products and virtually inaugurated infrastructure assets completed in the new district.

He also released ‘Shesrab’, the annual magazine of Government Degree College Zanskar, and a special postal cover on Gonbo Rangjon in collaboration with India Post.

Addressing the gathering, Saxena said Zanskar’s district status reflects the region’s distinct identity and long-standing aspirations. He highlighted the region’s monasteries, mountains, trekking routes, adventure activities and traditions as key tourism attractions.

The L-G said over 4.05 lakh tourists visited Ladakh up to August 31, including more than 3.71 lakh domestic and over 33,000 foreign visitors, noting the potential for increased business and employment opportunities for local hotels, homestays, taxis, restaurants, shops and artisans.

He stressed that tourism development should remain sustainable, responsible and people-centric, while protecting Zanskar’s environment and cultural traditions.

Highlighting the Nimmu–Padum–Darcha Road and NH-301 Kargil–Zanskar Highway, Saxena said improved connectivity would create new opportunities for tourism, local businesses, artisans, drivers, guides and young entrepreneurs.

The L-G also urged Zanskar’s youth to preserve their heritage while using digital platforms and modern technology to showcase the region globally and explore new avenues in tourism and entrepreneurship.

The event was attended by CEC LAHDC Kargil Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, Ladakh MP Mohd Haneefa Jan, public representatives and senior officials.
