Kargil: In a significant step toward improving urban infrastructure and reducing traffic congestion, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, chaired a high-level meeting to review the proposed ₹98-crore Multi-Level Car Parking (MLCP) project near the old taxi stand in Kargil town.
The review meeting saw the participation of key officials, including Executive Councillor Kacho Mohammad Feroz, Deputy Commissioner and CEO LAHDC Kargil Rakesh Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Imteeaz Kacho, Executive Engineer R&B, Executive Officer Municipal Committee, and representatives from GPS Green Building Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi — the project’s consultancy firm.
During the session, GPS Green Building Pvt. Ltd. presented a detailed plan outlining the MLCP’s design and features. The proposed facility will be built in two phases — Phase I is estimated to cost ₹56.79 crore and Phase II ₹41.56 crore — and will accommodate around 300 vehicles. The structure will include four levels, featuring parking bays, green spaces, restrooms, lifts, and commercial space on the top floor.
CEC Akhoon emphasized that the MLCP would play a crucial role in decongesting Kargil’s busy market area and enhance the town’s urban landscape. He directed the ADC to expedite the documentation process, including the removal of old structures on-site, to ensure timely commencement of construction.
To promote public awareness, Dr. Akhoon also proposed installing an LED screen at the site to showcase a 3D video rendering of the completed project. He instructed officials to submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the relevant authorities at the earliest to secure administrative approval.
Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar supported the idea of utilizing the top floor for commercial activities, particularly a food court, noting its potential to offer scenic views and attract footfall. Several technical enhancements and public-friendly features were also discussed to ensure the project meets long-term needs.
Once executed, the MLCP is expected to significantly reduce roadside parking, streamline vehicular movement, and boost commercial activity in the heart of Kargil.
