LEH, SEPTEMBER 22, 2025- The Department of History, EJM College Leh, organized a one-day historical tour for the students as part of their academic activities under the guidance of Dr. Amjad Khan and Dr. Nazia Jabeen, Assistant Professors of History. The main aim of the tour was to provide practical exposure to the rich cultural and history of Ladakh. The tour began with a visit to Alchi Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, famous for its unique wall paintings, wooden carvings, and early Buddhist art. Students were guided through the monastery complex and learned about its historical background and artistic significance.
The second destination was the Saspol Caves, also known as the Gon-Nila-Phuk Caves, located in Saspol. These rock-cut cave temples are among the finest examples of Buddhist art in the Sham Valley. The caves contain vibrant wall paintings dating from the 13th to 15th centuries, created by followers of the Drikung Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Of the five caves, only two still preserve brightly-coloured murals, which mark the transition from the Kashmiri to the Central Tibetan style of painting. The visit gave students an opportunity to understand the importance of these caves in the history of Ladakh.
The tour concluded with a visit to the Basgo Monastery and Palace, an important site that once played a key role in the political history of Ladakh. Students explored the remains of the monastery and palace complex, while also learning about its historical role and cultural value.
Overall, the one-day historic tour proved to be highly informative and enriching. It provided the students with valuable insights into the art, architecture, and history of Ladakh, making it a memorable learning experience.
