Leh: The much awaited Siachen Folk Festival is currently on and it is awaiting the connoisseurs of Himalayan art and culture.
The sixth Saichen Folk Festival, organized by Chamshen Chansyong Tsogspa with Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation on June 5, at Stapolo Ground in Chamshen Nubra.
Deputy Chairman LAHDC-Leh Tsering Angchuk inaugurated the festival. Various cultural and sports events organised.
The two-day extravaganza offers a glimpse of the rich culture of the region as well as is an attempt to spread awareness about the heritage of the old Silk Route. Witness the breathtaking Nubra Valley come alive with folk performances, cultural displays, and indigenous games including an archery match! While at it, sample local foods and take back home local handicrafts as souvenirs.
The festival borrows its name from the Siachen Glacier, one of India’s most challenging army basecamps that also happen to offer many adventures in the great outdoors for thrill-seekers. Think glacier expedition, mountaineering, skiing, and a relaxing dip in a natural hot spring to rejuvenate yourself after a long day.
Even the venue for the festival is not your ordinary place — Chamsen was in use as a polo track when the region was a vital trade route. Once done revelling in the festivities, drive along Nubra River where the villages of Sumur, Kyagar, Tirith, and Panamik, among others, give you a glimpse of how life thrives in one of the most challenging regions of the country.
