Leh, August 5: The District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Leh, successfully concluded a three-day Jolly Phonics Professional Development Programme aimed at enhancing foundational English teaching skills among educators. The training brought together 120 Foundational Stage English teachers from the educational zones of Nubra, Durbuk and Khalsi.
Organised in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the programme focused on strengthening foundational literacy through structured phonics-based instruction.
The valedictory session was presided over by Principal, DIET Leh, Sonam Dorje Namgyal, who underscored the importance of systematic phonics instruction in early language development. He highlighted key aspects such as phonemic awareness, correct sound articulation, grapheme-phoneme correspondence, blending, segmenting and action-based learning, urging teachers to effectively implement these techniques in classrooms.
The training was conducted by resource persons Shehnaz Jussa and Ritu Bawa, who delivered sessions on Synthetic Phonics through presentations, practical demonstrations and interactive classroom activities, equipping teachers with effective strategies for foundational English instruction.
Participants appreciated the programme’s practical approach and academic value, stating that it had significantly strengthened their classroom teaching skills and enhanced their ability to deliver quality foundational literacy education.
The successful completion of the programme reflects DIET Leh’s continued commitment to improving teaching standards and promoting evidence-based instructional practices to strengthen foundational education across the Union Territory of Ladakh.
