Nyoma, Sept 5: District Sheep Husbandry Officer (DSHO), Changthang, Dr. Mohd Abass undertook a three-day extensive field tour of Nyoma Sub-Division to review the functioning of the Sheep Husbandry Department, assess ongoing developmental works and interact with field staff as well as nomadic pastoral communities.
During the visit, Dr. Abass inspected various field centres of the department and reviewed the implementation of livestock development programmes, field-level interventions and departmental activities. He also examined records and registers maintained at the centres to assess documentation, progress and overall functioning.
Interacting with field functionaries, the DSHO took stock of the challenges faced by the staff and stressed the need for proper record maintenance, timely execution of departmental schemes and efficient delivery of services to livestock-rearing and nomadic communities. He underscored the importance of close coordination among field staff to ensure government initiatives effectively reach beneficiaries at the grassroots.
As part of the tour, Dr. Abass visited several villages and held interactions with nomadic and pastoral families dependent on sheep and Pashmina goat rearing for their livelihood. He listened to their concerns, demands and suggestions related to livestock husbandry and issues affecting the herding community.
Highlighting the initiatives of the UT Administration of Ladakh for the promotion of the Pashmina sector, Dr. Abass encouraged herders to adopt improved livestock management practices and called for greater community participation to ensure sustainable growth of the sector. He also emphasized strengthening field-level extension services to enhance the livelihoods of pastoral communities across Changthang.
The three-day tour enabled the department to undertake a first-hand assessment of ground realities, review field operations and strengthen direct engagement with staff and nomadic communities, reinforcing the delivery of livestock development services in the remote areas of Changthang.
