Leh, Sept 5: In a major push to strengthen Ladakh’s horticulture sector, the Department of Horticulture, Leh on Saturday organised a Kisan Mela-cum-Fruit and Flower Exhibition, drawing participation from over 250 farmers, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), entrepreneurs, NGOs and government officials.
The event, held at the office complex of the Chief Horticulture Officer, Leh, was inaugurated by Chief Secretary of UT Ladakh, Shri Ashish Kundra, IAS, in the presence of Commissioner/Secretary, Finance, Shri Tsewang Tharchin, IA&AS, who attended as the Guest of Honour, along with senior officers and dignitaries.
Welcoming the gathering, Director of Horticulture, Shri Tsewang Punchok, highlighted the steady growth of the horticulture sector in Ladakh and outlined the Department’s initiatives being implemented under various government schemes. On the occasion, the Annual Report of the Department of Horticulture was also released by the Chief Secretary.
The exhibition featured a wide range of stalls displaying fresh fruits, flowers, value-added products, mushroom cultivation, and modern horticultural tools and machinery. Touring the exhibition, the Chief Secretary commended the efforts of the Department and progressive farmers, while encouraging mushroom growers and floriculture entrepreneurs to scale up production to meet the rising market demand.
The programme also recognised excellence in the sector, with certificates and mementoes presented to outstanding FPOs and entrepreneurs for their contributions to horticultural development.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Chief Horticulture Officer, Leh, Smt. Kunzang Wangmo.
