Kargil, Aug 14: The Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (LAAC&L), Kargil, on Thursday observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day with a solemn programme featuring a silent march, a photo exhibition and a poignant theatrical performance highlighting the human suffering and displacement caused by the Partition of India in 1947.

Organised under the aegis of the Department of Tourism and Culture, UT of Ladakh, the programme was held at the Tourist Facilitation Centre (TFC) Amphitheatre, Biamathang.

The observance began with a two-minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives and suffered during Partition. It was followed by a silent march symbolising collective remembrance of the millions who endured displacement, separation and hardship during the upheaval of 1947.

A special photo exhibition showcased images and visual documentation of mass migration, refugee journeys, separated families and the difficult circumstances faced by people in the aftermath of Partition. The exhibition also sought to familiarise the younger generation with the human consequences of the historic division.

Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC), Kargil, Ghulam Mohammad attended the programme as Chief Guest, while Councillor Abdul Hadi was the Guest of Honour. Poets, writers, scholars, artists, theatre practitioners and members of the public also participated.

Noted writer and scholar Muhammad Sadiq Hardassi spoke about the impact and legacy of Partition in the context of Ladakh, particularly its historical and socio-cultural implications for the region.

Master Jaffer Ali reflected on the wider consequences of Partition across India, including the enormous loss of lives, displacement of communities and its lasting social and emotional scars.

Adding an artistic dimension to the commemoration, the Ranthak Theatre Group presented a moving theatrical performance portraying separation, uncertainty, displacement and human suffering associated with the events of 1947.

The programme concluded with a call to preserve the memories of Partition with sensitivity and dignity while drawing lessons from history to strengthen peace, unity, social harmony and mutual understanding.

The observance reaffirmed the collective resolve to remember the victims and survivors of Partition and sensitise future generations to the devastating human cost of hatred, violence and division.
