Leh Ladakh captivates you for its spellbinding natural beauty, but its traditional Ladakhi food is something that stands out and truly brings the culture and heritage of the destination into perspective. Dine-in cafes are designed around a Ladakhi house, overlooking serene mountains. Feast on an authentic Kashmiri Wazwan and sip butter tea, as the forces of nature and the beautifully presented food platters take your breath away.  Here are 6 cafes and restaurants in Leh you must visit to enjoy Ladakhi food with a view.

1. Namza

Namza is a boutique cum cafe that overlooks a kitchen garden. It’s an ideal spot to relax and sit right in the middle of the bustling city of Leh while enjoying an aromatic Yarkhandi pulao. This pulao has a rich history that can be traced back all the way to the Silk Route when travellers from China trekked across Leh to Srinagar. You can not only enjoy centuries-old Ladakhi dishes but also shop for designer traditional Ladakhi dresses.

2. The Grand Wazwan Restaurant

If you’re craving a royal meal of Kashmiri Wazwan, there’s no better place to visit than The Grand Wazwan Restaurant. Nestled near the Leh Market, this restaurant offers you delicious dishes like Keema Naan, Rogan Josh, Yakhni Mutton and Kashmiri Pulau. Enjoy a wholesome meal with your loved ones as you dig into an authentic Kashmiri fare, prepared with warmth. Do keep in mind that this restaurant is usually crowded, so make sure you reach here as early as you can.

3. Thabtsang Cafe

Soak in the 360-degree view of Leh at Thabtsang Cafe. Boasting warm hospitality, mesmerising view and delicious food, this cafe is known for serving a fusion of western and traditional food. Feast on pasta, sip butter tea as you relish the view of Stok Kangri. This modern cafe was built inside a traditional old house. It’s surely a sight to behold. When you’re here, do try the seabuckthorn juice which is prepared from the berry. It’s known to have anti-ageing and wound healing benefits.

4. Coffee Culture

Just as the name suggests, Coffee Culture is a cool-contemporary cafe in Zangsti. After a tiring day of wandering around the bazaar, you can visit Coffee Culture for a reliable Wi-Fi connection, a wide range of lattes, brewed coffee and lip-smacking snacks. While you’re here, do try the Banana cake which has a soothing hint of cinnamon in it. It’s a wonderful cafe to unwind with your gang, and enjoy a coffee break from a hectic travel itinerary.

5. De Khambir

Khambir is a traditional Ladakhi bread that has a brown colour with a thick crust, shaped in a pan. This famous Ladakhi dish served at functions is best relished for breakfast with a glass of butter tea. At De Khambir, you can feast on their Mini Khambir that’s the cutest bread you’d have ever seen. Filled with apricot puree and butter, you must leave De Khambir without sampling their Mini Khambir and Dasthuk, which is a comforting soupy porridge made of rice, veggies, lentils, cheese and milk. When you’re here, do purchase their local products and handicrafts, and support the local craftsmen.

6.  Alchi Kitchen

Nilza Wangmo and her mother started Alchi Kitchen in 2016 with the aim to put Ladakhi cuisine on the map. It claims to be the first-ever Ladakhi restaurant to serve food prepared from a grandmother’s recipes. With three successful branches across Ladakh, Alchi Kitchen is a pilgrim site for foodies yearning to taste authentic Ladakhi food. Alchi Kitchen serves dishes like Tashi Tagye tea made of 8 ingredients, fermented Ladakhi bread, Khambir, and the pasta’s unsung Ladakhi cousin, Chutagi. This is one of the best eateries in Leh you must visit.

The next time you plan a trip to Leh-Ladakh, make sure you add these places to your wishlist. They serve authentic Ladakhi dishes with a modern twist, coupling them with unparalleled views.
