Kargil: In a vibrant celebration of local talent and women empowerment, the Akanksha Haat programme was inaugurated today in Kargil as part of the ongoing Sampoornata Abhiyan Samman Samaroh. The event was formally launched by Hon’ble Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Er. Punchok Tashi, and showcased the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of women-led Self Help Groups (SHGs) from across the district.
The inaugural ceremony began with EC Tashi visiting various stalls set up by SHGs from different blocks, each presenting a colorful array of locally made, culturally rich products — from traditional foods to winterwear and handicrafts.
During the event, Chief Planning Officer Abdul Hadi elaborated on the objectives of Akanksha Haat. “The aim is to provide a meaningful platform for SHG women to showcase their talent, connect with markets, and grow financially,” he said. “This is not just about products — it’s about confidence, identity, and economic independence.”
A total of 12 stalls were set up, including five from the Karsha block and seven from other areas. Visitors were treated to a wide variety of indigenous items such as Black Zeera from Kaksar, known for its medicinal value, and Markhur, a nutritious handmade local delicacy. Woollen garments like Gonchas, Waskats, and Ladakhi caps, all lovingly handcrafted, highlighted the region’s rich textile tradition.
One of the highlights was the serving of Skyu, a traditional Ladakhi noodle dish that drew both attention and appreciation for its cultural significance.
In his address, EC Punchok Tashi praised the SHG women for their dedication and creativity. “These women are not only keeping Ladakh’s heritage alive through their skills, but also becoming economic pillars for their families and communities,” he said. He encouraged the public to support these groups by buying local and promoting local, underlining that such grassroots initiatives fuel both cultural pride and economic resilience.
Reaffirming LAHDC Kargil’s commitment to women’s empowerment, EC Tashi stated, “We will ensure SHGs are connected with government schemes and financial assistance. Their success is the success of Ladakh itself.”
The Akanksha Haat stands as a vibrant symbol of self-reliance, community spirit, and the transformative power of women’s entrepreneurship in Ladakh.
