Leh: As part of the ongoing Month of Compassion initiative in Nubra Sub-Division, the Department of Agriculture, Ladakh, organized awareness and outreach camps to promote compassion-driven, sustainable agriculture and revive traditional farming practices in the region.
The one-day awareness camps were held at Kobet on 18th July and Turtuk Youl on 19th July, 2025, with the aim of reconnecting farmers with traditional crops and eco-friendly methods of cultivation.
Agriculture officials delivered expert lectures on the importance of highly nutritious traditional crops, many of which have faded from local practice due to lack of awareness. The speakers highlighted the nutritional, cultural, and commercial value of these crops, especially their rising demand in international markets. Farmers were encouraged to integrate these varieties into their cropping patterns for better food security and enhanced income.
A special session on sustainable farming was also conducted, covering topics such as composting, soil and water conservation, and the use of organic bio-inputs. Officials stressed that Ladakh’s natural environment already supports organic farming and offered practical ways to strengthen these practices further.
The initiative received a warm and enthusiastic response from the local farming communities. Many farmers appreciated the initiative and expressed willingness to adopt both traditional crops and sustainable techniques shared during the camps. The interactive sessions allowed for two-way communication, fostering a deeper understanding between farmers and agricultural experts.
