Drass: In a heartening initiative focused on inclusion and dignity, a five-day outreach and assessment camp for persons with disabilities (Divyangjans) and senior citizens concluded today at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Drass.
The camp, organised by the District Social and Tribal Welfare Department and ALIMCO, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Health and Education Departments of Kargil, aimed to identify and support individuals in need of assistive aids — many of whom reside in some of Ladakh’s most remote areas.
To ensure wide reach and accessibility, the camp was held across five strategic locations — Auditorium Hall Kargil, CHC Sankoo, PHC Barsoo, PHC Trespone, and CHC Drass. This decentralised model brought relief to residents who would otherwise struggle with long travel to access basic services.
Expert teams from ALIMCO (Mohali) conducted technical evaluations for nearly 130 individuals throughout the camp. On the final day in Drass alone, around 25 persons were assessed. These evaluations will help design and deliver customised mobility aids and devices suited to each individual’s unique needs.
From wheelchairs and hearing aids to artificial limbs, walking sticks, and motorised tricycles — a range of essential equipment will soon be distributed free of cost to the beneficiaries, empowering them to live more independent and dignified lives.
Officials assured that distribution will begin soon, once procurement and logistics are finalised. The camp has not only offered physical assistance but also sent a strong message of compassion and care to the underserved and differently-abled community of Kargil.
