Leh: A delegation from the Sunni community has strongly urged for the delimitation of council constituencies ahead of the upcoming LAHDC elections, citing the need for a more inclusive and representative electoral structure.
Led by Dr. Abdul Qayoum, President of Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam (AMI) Leh, the delegation met with Chairman/CEC LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson, in the presence of BJP State President Tashi Gyalson Khachu. The group included AMI’s Women President, Youth President, senior community representatives, and executive members.
During the meeting, the delegation stressed that delimitation is essential to reflect demographic realities and ensure fair representation in the Hill Council. They proposed that a slight postponement of elections—if necessary—would be acceptable to allow time for a transparent and just delimitation process.
The delegation also submitted a memorandum seeking the long-overdue inclusion of the Arghon community under Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, requesting the Council’s support to raise the issue at higher levels for social justice and equal rights.
Expressing gratitude, the Sunni community thanked the CEC, the Government of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah for their commitment to unity, equality, and development in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
