LEH: A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, headed by Digvijay Singh, Member of Rajya Sabha, began a two-day visit to Leh on Wednesday to review and understand the region’s educational landscape.
The day started with a comprehensive presentation titled “Initiatives to Support School Education in Ladakh.” It was delivered by A Srija, Economics Advisor, Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, and Bhanu Praba, Administrative Secretary, School Education Department, Ladakh. The session highlighted recent progress, ongoing challenges, and future strategies for improving education in the Union Territory.
The delegation received a warm traditional welcome at Druk Padma Karpo School, where students greeted them with khataks and a welcome song. Principal Mingyur Angmo introduced the school’s unique approach to education, rooted in the Drukpa lineage, and emphasized the importance of preserving cultural identity through learning.
The committee later visited the PM Shri Government Primary School in Spituk, where they were given an overview of the school’s operations by the Education Department.
One of the key stops was at SECMOL (Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh) and the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL). Sonam Wangchuk, founder of both institutions, shared insights into the alternative learning systems they’ve pioneered—from grassroots school-level education to innovative higher education models that integrate sustainability and real-world skills.
Beyond academics, the committee also visited local landmarks including Sangam Point, the Hall of Fame, and Leh Palace, where a light and sound show was arranged for the guests.
The visit will continue on July 18, with the committee scheduled to engage with the University of Ladakh, aiming to gather deeper insights to support national education policy reforms.
