Leh: Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson, met with Rohit Thakur, Education Minister of Himachal Pradesh, to discuss shared challenges and explore new opportunities for strengthening the education sector in both regions.
The meeting, held in Leh, was also attended by Deputy Chairman Tsering Angchuk, Secretary Education Bhanu Prabha (IAS), Director School Education Tsering Paldan, Chief Education Officer Deldan Angmo, Principal DIET Leh Mirza Mehdi, and District Planning Officer Dorjey Phuntsog. From the Himachal delegation, Rajesh Sharma (IFS), State Project Director; Ashish Kohli (IAS), Director School Education; and Dr. Amarjeet Singh, Director Higher Education, participated in the discussions.
The dialogue offered a valuable platform to exchange ideas on policy reforms, innovations, and challenges in school and higher education. Rohit Thakur shared several key initiatives undertaken in Himachal Pradesh to transform its education system, including structured teacher training programmes, integration of digital learning tools, and enhanced school monitoring systems. He highlighted the state’s efforts to build strong community engagement models and improve overall student outcomes through strategic policy changes.
In response, CEC Tashi Gyalson and Deputy Chairman Tsering Angchuk provided an overview of Ladakh’s evolving education landscape since its transition to Union Territory status. They spoke about the region’s ongoing shift to CBSE affiliation, infrastructure upgrades in schools, and efforts to boost enrolment and academic support, particularly for students in remote areas. They also highlighted the success of the Council Model School, which has seen a remarkable rise in student enrolment, signaling growing public trust in government education initiatives.
The discussion also opened avenues for future collaboration between Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. Among the key proposals was the possibility of allowing Ladakhi students to enroll in distance learning programmes, including B.Ed courses, through Himachal Pradesh University—expanding access to professional education without geographical constraints.
The meeting concluded on a positive and forward-looking note, with both sides agreeing that closer cooperation could lead to meaningful advancements in education, capacity building, and innovation in the Himalayan region.
