Leh: Providing tap water to more than 11,859 households post August 5 under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in district Leh of Uninon Territory of Ladakh has achieved 50 percent target.

“Now 11,894 houses were provided tap water out of 23,462 households in district Leh of Union Territory Ladakh. We have achieved 50 percent target and majority of connection were provided post August 5 after erstwhile state of J&K was bifurcated in two union Territories,” an official told IndusDispatch.

He informed that the only 1,246 (5.31 percent) households were provided tap water before August 5. Similarly, the district Kargil is also close to achieving 50 percent target.

“9,356 which is 48.9 percent of total households 19,295 in district Kargil of Union Territory of Ladakh were provided tap water,” he said.

He added that in overall, 21,249 which is 49.70 percent of total households 42,757 in Union Territory of Ladakh were provided tap water.
It is pertinent to mention here that Jal Jeevan Mission, is envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India.
The programme will also implement source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through grey water management, water conservation, rain water harvesting.

The Jal Jeevan Mission will be based on a community approach to water and will include extensive Information, Education and communication as a key component of the mission.
