Leh: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena today flagged off the first air consignment of 15,000 “A-grade” Ladakh-grown Liliums from Leh Airport to national markets, marking a significant step towards commercial floriculture in the Union Territory.
The initiative, completed in just 60 days, aims to create new livelihood opportunities for local communities while promoting agricultural diversification and rural entrepreneurship.
Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of financial empowerment of farmers and youth through agricultural diversification, the initiative seeks to provide Ladakh’s growers access to flower markets across the country.
The project is already generating local employment, with 15 women engaged in cutting, sorting and packaging of flowers. A trained local youth is also managing the marketing of the produce.
LG Saxena said the flower fields could also emerge as sought-after destinations for tourists and film shoots, creating a convergence between profitable agriculture and sustainable tourism.
He further said the colourful flower fields would add a new dimension to Ladakh’s rugged landscape while opening fresh economic opportunities for local communities.
